The Idea

De Stijl is known for its abstraction, disciplined use of form, and vibrant interplay of primary colors against neutrals. With this project, our aim was to create three posters that embody the de Stijl vision of universal harmony. We sought to evoke the movement’s iconic grid structures and asymmetrical balance, translating its philosophy into designs that merge precision with creative expression.

The Process

Our journey began by studying the foundational elements of de Stijl—its grid systems, minimalism, and the deliberate use of color. Initial hand-drawn sketches allowed us to explore balanced, yet asymmetrical compositions. Transitioning to digital design, we focused on creating strict color blocks and ample negative space. Through several iterations, we fine-tuned each poster to ensure that every element contributed to a unified, orderly aesthetic that is true to de Stijl’s principles while remaining visually fresh.

The Result

The final series is a modern homage to de Stijl, characterized by bold primary hues, structured layouts, and a clear, minimalist approach. These posters articulate a dialogue between simplicity and complexity, evoking a sense of order that is both rigorous and inviting. The project reflects Boldt Studio’s dedication to reinterpreting classic design movements with a contemporary perspective, ensuring each piece stands as a timeless statement.
